(In case this is helpful: In my area there was a free online site that provides tv schedules for those without cable and there are sites with helpful hints about using antennae, which upped my confidence. When you click on the show you're watching, the tv brings up info about that show and earlier and later ones on each channel, which is a help as well. I don't know if this is a function of smart tvs but that seems likely.)
Luckily, friends I visited where I now live, who are pretty tech savvy, have gone this route and really encouraged me to do the same. They live in a home outside the city, so I wasn't completely confident but decided to check this out again.
So, I did some research and felt comfortable that I was likely to be happy with this brand and the Ultra-thin Digital HDTV Antenna, with a range of 130 miles. If you're concerned about the installation: I’m a 73-year-old 5’ female with ‘devastating’ damage to both shoulders--typing this was quite painful--and I still had no problems installing the antenna. Easy Peasy. Plus, it didn't interfere with the DVD player that is still attached.
I did try removing the amplifier, counter-intuitive, but was suggested, and the reception immediately improved. What surprised me was that it also worked much better lying flat, right under the tv. I moved the cable modem (for internet) a bit farther back, as that did seem to cause some interference, as the instructions indicated. At that point the picture equaled cable on all stations without wavering. (Today's cable requires a modem but you can purchase your own to eliminate the monthly rental fees, which my friends have done. I'm waiting until I move to see if I should do that.)
I can’t believe how long I went without tv before. I’m getting almost as many channels as I got on cable at the low tier I had, but also more PBS channels than cable (one has ‘world’ programming) and a couple more new stations that are fun. The only ones I’ll miss when I drop off the cable set are The Weather Chanel and C-Span but they’re not worth the money I’ll save. I’m in a tough location and the picture is still great, so I’m expecting this to get even better when I move. And, the reception is equal to cable, which really surprised me. (I have a Roku TV.) On the very few stations where the reception is weak, I tweak the antenna and they're fine.
My friend had suggested I add tv service to my bedroom, as it’s painful to lie down so I put off going to bed until—well, it’s 5:30 am right now... (With tv on in the background, I’ll likely fall asleep better, but, I couldn’t justify the extra modem with cable. The free antenna will really be a great solution.)
Re the free antenna offer for a review: If this one wasn't working so well, it would have been better to return it and get a different brand, so that doesn't affect the nature of my review. I've already suggested this to other persons I know who have issues with cable, and, even if you retain your cable, you can bring in extra stations that cable may not include, as I have.
I asked one question to their customer service at the address on the card that came with the antenna and they got back the same day. (I was just checking my email--totally out of control at 65K--and located their response, duh.)
I plan on updating this with photos in the near future, one of the same station with cable and with the antenna, before I 'cut the cord', which will be in the next few days :)
Of course I did not use the card, and honestly I don't know why they think they need to do that, because this is actually a pretty decent flat antenna.
The antenna pulls in 44 channels where I live, mounted in a first floor window. I had recently purchased one of those newish cylindrical antennas that looks kind of like an "adult" item. The cylindrical one pulled in only 28 channels mounted in the exact same place.
It took me about two minutes to set this up. Procedure is simple: screw the coax to the TV's cable connector, plug the USB-A into one of the USB ports on the TV, put the antenna in the window, do a SCAN on the TV.
The antenna came with a plug-in adapter in case you don't have a free USB port on your TV.
It seems kind of lightweight, but I didn't use it, so I can't say if the adapter is good or not.
I do think it's nice that they included an adapter. Other antennas that I have purchased did not include that.
Even though it's on the ground floor, this antenna receives the most channels of any antenna that I own (I only own 4 antennas, but still).
Despite the fishy card in the package, I think the antenna deserves five stars, based on its performance.
The product is easy to use and does a full channel scan of the skies in about 5 minutes. It’s useful to ping it in different directions and re-do the scan to find the optimal positioning. A relative a few miles from me but with less tree cover was able to access about 70 channels.
Top reviews from other countries
Great packaging!
Haven’t hooked it up yet but several of my friends have it and got a extra 31 more channels,
Just make sure if you can put it in a windows with the most least obstructions,
If you can put it in a window that has a clear view of the skyline preferably facing in a direction that you find will pick up the most channels, not in front of a wall or garage or trees, the less obstructions the better the reception!
If you are putting on a window then put it in the center about 8 inches from the top of the window and if the left or right side is close to a protruding outside wall put it on the window farther away from the wall so as the unit has a clearer uninstructed view of the outside skyline!
Weather conditions will affect reception and channels will come and go depending on the weather also different times of day will also affect your signal as it may be sunny and clear where you are but from any area the signal is being sent from may be experiencing bad weather at the same time yours is clear and sunny same at night!
I have put in several of these units people I know have bought,
Simple instructions, only the details I put up above that they were not aware of!
As to this seller, they are a 10 star rating even though they only allow five!
Question response time excellent!
Delivery time very good!
Product does exactly what it says it does even better if you put it in a more clearer none obstructing view of the skyline preferably in the direction where most your signals are coming from as you will see when it is hooked up to your TV on how many more channels you have gained
Price excellent!
Easy to install- just remember what I wrote above about obstructions!
Quality very good
Packaging- is ok, solid paper box, In a plastic type shipping envelope but it would of been nice to see it in a bubble wrap envelope but still it’s a solid unit so it survived and bumps it would of got along the way!
A must to own if you want to Save money and cut the cable guy out!
Definitely!!!
Happy channel hopping!
