This is good fresh quality rice, and at a good price (at least as of my purchase).
Note that brown rice doesn't keep as long as white, but this brand has always delivered and Amazon is apparently storing and rotating stock well enough, too.
First, despite the name and Chinese characters, this rice is NOT from China. This rice is grown in California, which is considered one of the safest rice producing regions because the growing fields are not reclaimed land contaminated with toxic metals; therefore California rice generally has slightly lower levels of arsenic, lead and cadmium compared to rice produced in many other growing locales.
Second, I see all the reviews describing bugs or worms in their package. This is my second purchase and I have seen no bugs in either. Insects are everywhere and there are so many opportunities for infection during the production, transit and warehousing of rice, many beyond the control of the producer. Obviously, the rice cannot be sprayed with insecticide. I have seen plenty of insect infestations in grain products I've purchased directly from grocers. Insects want to eat too, so it's difficult to completely control.
This is what I do with any grain or similar natural product I buy in bulk, regardless of source: Usually the grain is packaged in a clear plastic bag. Before opening the bag, I put on strong magnifying glasses (ASIN:B07XNWH8BT) and examine the product carefully through the bag. I look for any indication of infestation, including anything that looks like spider web threads, fine insect droppings, or the larva or insects themselves. If I can find none, then I put the still unopened bag in the freezer for a few days. A recent infestation might not be obvious, but the freezer should kill any eggs or nascent insects. Then, to prevent infestation in your own pantry, store the rice in a tightly sealed container. Also, the oils in whole grain rice will become rancid over time, so keeping excess rice in the freezer will keep it fresh as well as prevent infestation.
One thing to know about storing whole grains is that they will develop infestations if not used quickly or stored properly. That's true for spices, whole oats, wholegrain flours, and many other dry goods that people might not use quickly. So it's best to take some care with their storage.
It absolutely needs to be stored in an airtight bag or container. No matter how clean your kitchen, over time something will find its way into rice if it isn't sealed up 100%. Stored at room temperature, uncooked plain brown rice normally only lasts for 3-6 months, depending on humidity, airtight seal, etc.
The freezer is a better place to store anything you won't use within a month or so. Personally, I divided the 15 pound into three one-gallon ziploc bags. I got as much air out as possible and put all three in the freezer. We will use it straight out of the freezer (does not need to be thawed--makes no difference to cooking).
If you don't want to store it in the freezer, at least keep it in the freezer for a week -- this will kill any tiny possible weevil eggs or similar already in the rice (which is super common in grains and spices). But ideally, the freezer is the best long-term storage option.
