Sharing Our Superpowers - John Osborn, Bruce Cohen & Charlie Stewart

We are all blessed with certain unique gifts or “super powers”. We all have the potential to use these gifts to do good in the world. Some of us have a small circle of influence, others have a huge one. Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen's three guests on this episode of Inner Space all have impressive talents and each is using his rather large sphere of influence to help those who are hurting. Dr. Barbara's first guest, John Osborne, is a compassionate and gifted teacher with the Art of Living Foundation who is using his gift to help many – including veterans struggling with the invisible injuries of war. Dr. Barbara's second guest, Bruce Cohen is an Academy Award winning Hollywood producer who chooses projects that entertain, inspire and challenge us, and like Bruce, her final guest is an accomplished award winning storyteller. Charlie Stewart uses the medium of the documentary film to engage and inform his audience. On this final episode of Dr. Barbara's first season of Inner Space, we'll discover how these very special men use their gifts and their platforms to bring hope and help to those in need. Corporate Champions - Nicole Gardner and Andrea Inserra

In this episode of Inner Space Dr. Barbara explores some of the important work being done in the corporate sector focused on our Inner Space. Her guests are champions, innovators and she-roes who have helped convince senior executives to appreciate the relationship between mental well-being and productivity. Nicole Gardner is passionate about serving those who serve and their families. As a senior executive at IBM, she has used the might of her organization to harness knowledge and leverage innovation to develop new tools and create new opportunities for our veterans. Andrea Inserra didn’t set out to be a mental health champion but her compassion and determination to seek solutions for complex problems led her to recognize that more needed to be done to help those who were suffering emotionally. And her willingness to answer a friend’s call for help, led her to accept a very important invitation. We Can Talk About Suicide - Dr. Jennifer Ashton & Dr. Keita Franklin

For this special episode of Inner Space, Dr. Barbara discusses a subject that is difficult and challenging – but one that is very important for us to talk about. She sits down with Dr. Jennifer Ashton, who you may recognize from her appearances on "Good Morning America” as the Chief Medical Officer for ABC News. Sadly, in 2017, Jennifer lost someone very close to her to suicide. As a result, she has written a very powerful book, Life After Suicide, that is helping families heal after an unthinkable loss. Next, Dr. Barbara catches up with another good friend and colleague, Dr. Keita Franklin, the National Director of Suicide Prevention for the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Franklin’s career – first with the Department of Defense and now at the VA – has been devoted to saving the lives of those who serve our country. Each of these guests are helping us change the way we think about, talk about and address the mental health challenges that lead to emotional pain and suffering.

Shifting Family Dynamics - Ricki Lake, Wayne Brady & Mandie Taketa, Fred Knowles

Episode Intro: For this episode of Inner Space we're focusing on relationships and families, how they shape us, and the importance of working through the struggles that we inevitably face. Sometimes we pull together during times of crisis, sometimes despite our best efforts, our families can't withstand the strain and relationships end or change dramatically. As always, here on Inner Space, our focus is on how we can support and maintain emotional health and well-being during the best of times and the worst of times. Today's guests are all in the process of healing, rebuilding and sharing what's helped them and their families. First, host Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen sits down with Ricki Lake whose husband's suicide lead her to think very differently about herself and mental health, then she meets with Wayne Brady and his ex-wife, Mandie Taketa, who together, are redefining family, and challenging us all to rethink how we understand divorce. Finally, Dr. Barbara catches up with her dear friend, Fred Knowles whose family tragedy lead to a writing career and a professional opportunity he never could have imagined.

The truths that have to be discussed

It feels refreshing to be able to presence a safe space surrounding the direction of mental health conversations. Great speakers selection!

Fairly interesting, geared for the most privileged

Wayne Brady posted that he was on this show on Instagram, so I listened. I’ve been feeling especially anxious and depressed lately and hoped to gain some wisdom from the show. Overall, it has some good tips about the importance of understanding yourself, reaching out to others, reflecting on what’s going well and what’s not, etc. For anyone who has had therapy, meditation and or coaching, it will be familiar to you.

What turned me off was how much the host interjected herself into the interviews with her guests (I only listened to the one episode, it might be different in others). The guests on the episode I listened to all live in privilege (even if they didn’t grow up in it, they’re very well off financially now). Some of what they talked about doing that helped them is unattainable to me financially and I’m a fairly high earner. So this isn’t for everyone. It feels like it’s best for wealthier suburbanites. It wasn’t awful, just wasn’t great.

Important and Critical Message

Great first episode and hopeful it is followed by more important, meaningful conversations. End the stigma of mental health and creates connectivity among those that are passionate about making change.
