Women’s Herald Tribune Knit Shirt

SIZE GUIDE

Overview

The New York Herald Tribune shirt became an instant fashion piece when Jean Seberg donned it in the 1960 film “Breathless.” That iconic shirt is now loyally reproduced, down to the smallest detail, with Knickerbocker in Brooklyn. Our Herald Tribune knit shirt captures silver-screen grandeur with its historically accurate mock neck, ribbing, label and logo.

The Herald Tribune was a beloved newspaper from 1924 to 1966 when New York newsstands were crowded with daily tabloids and broadsheets. Its masthead gained global fame overnight when it graced Jean Seberg’s shirt in “Breathless.” The actress, portraying a jaunty student and aspiring journalist selling the newspaper on the streets of Paris, captured Parisian nonchalance with her pixie haircut, black eyeliner and casually seductive manner. She became a European icon that the world wanted to copy.

In keeping with the spirit of the movie, our shirt is off-white for a vintage look. Made of 100% cotton, it’s a fully fashioned knit, made by hand on a flatbed knitting machine with no stitched seams. We like to call it a shirt, but it’s thick enough to be considered a short-sleeve sweater, too.

We’ve studied the film to replicate the shirt’s mock neck, form-fitting ribbing and cropped sleeve length. The Herald Tribune nameplate is felt wool, applied with an appliqué sewing technique on the ribbed pattern. Even the woven label is made on a 1950s needle-loom machine to preserve the garment's authenticity.

The New York Times owns the Herald Tribune trademark and is the only authorized seller of clothing with the Herald Tribune masthead.

This shirt is part of our Early Edition of vintage-style clothing. Each item in this collection links to The Times’s past and is produced in collaboration with Knickerbocker in Brooklyn.
