Clay soil in pasture is much harder so just take a little at a time, empty, repeat, so you don't jam it full. I only test every two years so it isn't a problem but like the others said you will have a hard time getting it down to 5-6 inches in hard ground. Getting anything into hard clay is a problem but not the tools fault. I didn't try pounding it with a hammer but it seems to be built strong enough for a few hits. I order the short one, like a foot long.
There were two main problems. 1) soil built up behind the plunger. It got really bad, and got super compacted. I ended up being able to remove it with a metal skewer, but it wasn't easy. And a bunch of the dirt got forced up into the long shaft, probably never to be seen again. I think this could have been prevented by somehow filling in the top part of the cylindrical probe connector, but this might make manufacturing much more difficult. And it isn't *that* big of a deal, more a modern annoyance. The bigger issue is 2) the inside of the sampling end is kind of rough. I didn't think this would be nearly as big of a deal as it ended up. The texture makes it fairly difficult to slide your samples out using the plunger. It's still possible, but it requires quite a bit of elbow grease sometimes. I'm considering trying to rig up the Dremel or a drill with some sort of polishing pad to get it down to a smoother finish, but I'm not sure if this will be more effort than it's worth. It *does* work, it's just a bit cumbersome.
That said, the only other decent looking alternative to this is the Oakfield soil sampler. I've used it a few times, and I'm not sure it's really any better than this guy. I would say very clearly *not* worth twice the price. I'm not really disappointed in this product, but even at this price I think it could be slightly better.
However. It was too hard for me to use in my soil. I would go six to eight inches deep but pull out only one inch of soil!
I wish the side edges were beveled and polished so that it would be easier to remove compact soil off the side.
I also wish the tip was sharpened to a knife edge. I sharpened mine.
And also come with a protective cover for the sharp, business end for storage.
Finally, I wish it came with a removal tool (a reamer) to help pound out compact soil, since I believe those who need to use this tool often have this type of soil. I have been using a thick rebar to pound out my compact soil. If a tool was made, it should be a very solid shaft that's smooth on the edges, with a hard plastic/ rubber stopper to prevent you and the tool from reaming to far. That would also protect the sharpened tip as you hammer this reaming tool to take out compacted soil.
