This is my second massage ball and it pairs nicely with the smaller, “spiky” foot mobility ball that I’ve used in the past for plantar fasciitis. Where the smaller ball works well for rolling under the arch of my foot, the Muscle Max is the perfect size for smaller muscle groups (e.g. forearms, calves, biceps). I initially tried to work out some frequent trigger points in my forearms with the foot mobility ball but the increased surface area of the Muscle Max is much better suited for getting them to release. It’s definitely a “Hurts So Good” type of feeling (queue the John Cougar) but it’s much better than the soreness I’d otherwise feel while working out and I feel like I’m reducing my risk of injury from overcompensating for the sore muscles. I’d still rather have a massage but the MM is the next best thing for pain relief and I don’t have to wait a month to use it. :-)
The Muscle Max also works pretty well for working the quads while seated (though I still prefer a stick roller) and for back and trap muscles while lying down on top of it. For hamstrings and abs, I still prefer a foam roller, but placing the MM under the hamstring while seated on a solid chair definitely helps with muscle spasms/tightness and is decidedly more convenient when multitasking. I’m actually trying it out as I write this!
As others have stated, the Muscle Max is as hard as a lacrosse ball. It comes with a nylon carrying bag with pull cord that’s large enough to also hold my foot mobility ball but is otherwise nothing special.
Overall, I think the MM is good value for the money and particularly useful for relieving exercise-induced soreness.
THIS ball is about the size of a baseball, and just as hard. NOT so good for laying on. HOWEVER, for working out kinks and sore muscles, it's awesome; all they claim. The textured surface allows for a good grip, and it will really dig in to muscles. Granted, staying hydrated, stretching and proper potassium intake help too... This is a handy tool though, and light and small enough to easily travel with you. Another nice feature is that it doesn't seem particularly prone to picking up dirt and stains.
Even though the size was clearly explained on Amazon, I was surprised to see the ball when it arrived. It seemed smaller than I had imagined. But I was impressed with how hard it is. It really presses into whatever body part I try it on and the material it is made of has a good amount of friction with the wall or floor so even if I am not pushing against the ball very hard, it doesnt roll away, it stays put.
The packaging is attractive. The little carrying bag seems durable and lightweight enough, so I can see this being good for people who like to bring their own items to the gym with them. I do wish it came with more instruction and ideas for use. Like I said, using this was my first time using a massage ball or anything like it, so I could see on the little card it came with, that I could put it between my shoulder and the floor, between my glute and the floor, between my back and the wall but then I didn't know what I should really do after that or what I should expect it to feel like, or how long I should do it for optimal results, etc. I found a short video with a couple using the ball and smiling but it didn't help me any more than the little card the ball came with. So, I guess it has been trial and error, figuring out what feels good and how I think I should use this.
I've found I like adding the ball into other stretches or exercises. Like if I am doing wall sits, massage my back with the ball or if I am going to do hip thrusters, roll my feet on the ball. Ive only had it for a week, Im sure Ill come up with more ideas.
While I am using the ball, it isn't a sensation I really enjoy but I do notice I like the way I feel on the muscles I used it on later in the day. Also, oddly enough, when I sneeze, especially if I have been training my back that day, my back tenses up so much that it hurts but since I have been using the muscle max on my back, it hasn't been tensing up as much when I sneeze. That was an unexpected but welcomed result.
I cant honestly say if this product seems like a good value for the money because I haven't ever bought any similar product or gone to a human massager, so that's why I left that unrated.
