They said it would be a 2-3 week delivery but it came in a few days even through the heavy snow storms going on here.
I set it up in a few minutes and turned it on. It went through the normal updating and channel searching and the like. Then we tried to open Netflix and the app would not open. A quick look in the 'Questions' and we rebooted it and everything works great.
They give you a code to add when you log into Prime and that was very seamless. I think because the computer I logged into was one the same connection as the TV.
I now get more viewing options on that TV than any other one that we have.
I was a little worried about the comments that said the sound quality was not great. Mine is great, so I am not sure if they vary or not.
Fantastic TV for my needs.
Update September 2021: I was getting ready to watch a bit of TV but a message said to put the remote down and step away from the TV set. Ok, it didn't say exactly that but you get my gist.
When it got done it was about 10 times better! They have far more viewing channels. There is even one or two news channels worth watching which there was not before. My son is an IT guy and even he said he couldn't believe the difference.
So far this is working perfect for my life and my budget.
With the latest update to the firmware , the Fire TV controls almost identically to the Fire Stick UI that you may already be comfortable with. If you have an Amazon account setup already ( which you should ) it will instantly remember the profiles setup on the Fire Stick and BOOM, you will be able to have everyone access their profiles , apps, television shows, and channels whenever they sit down to use the TV. It's truly a one of a kind experience going from a regular TV to a Smart TV.
The picture on this larger model is crisp, it's able to be seen easily from far away. The sound can be put up to louder volume than expected and be heard well. And, better yet the packaging came perfectly so there were no dead pixels or other damage on arrival. It's great bang for your buck!
My main 'complaint' is that the Fire TV application has SO MANY MORE ADS than the Roku we've been using. If you are someone who sits in front of the screen and just lets it play for hours this may not be a big deal breaker for you. If you are someone who frequently needs to step away from the screen you may find it as obnoxious as I do.
The usual ad breaks are to be expected. No one likes them but they par for the course.
My issue is with the nuisance ads. When you push pause and you are penalized for stopping watching by getting a two minute ad when you resume. As someone who's television watching is interrupted on a frequent, ongoing, regular basis this is quite frustrating. Say someone needs attention, you pause for ten seconds to give them your attention, resume to watch three minutes of ads. You get to watch about two minutes of the show following those commercials only to be needed again, push pause, give them your attention, resume only to get to watch another three minutes of ads before your show begins again. Someone needs you again ONLY THIS TIME, instead of it taking ten seconds of your attention it takes five minutes. So, the tv went into screen saver. When you push resume this time it takes you to the beginning of the program you were watching were, you guessed it, you get t watch the beginning advertisements! And then, to make matters worse, after you're forced to watch them you navigate to where you left off only to push play and get to watch those commercials too!
What gives... I'm hoping that in time it will "learn" us and stop this nonsense... But, right out of the box - If you're choosing between Roku and Fire... I'd buy the Roku/TV. In hindsight a separate Roku/TV may make the most sense anyway. I'm not sure if the FireTV can die independent of the television. (Roku get hot in time so we opted to go with the combo unit this time.) I guess we're going to have to cross that bridge when we get to it.
The FireTV is also a bit glitchy. Now and then it skips about five seconds (don't bother to rewind... unless you want to watch ads...).
When you leave a program part way through, bringing it back to the main ap screen, and then return to the program it does not pick up where you left it off. It picks up from some randomly generated place (where an ad begins... even if there is not "ad dot" there). I typically use Hulu (though I've noticed it in other aps as well). This is not a Hulu issue... Having used Hulu through Roku for years now, this is a FireTV issue.
The pros:
TV has nice picture
Lightweight
Typical tv
The cons:
FireTV not as good as Roku, so far
