I love the Beauty and the Beat album, so to hear the remastered disc is awesome. I can hear some sounds in the music I didn't notice before, and it is brighter, louder, and fuller in sound than the previous version. Also, Our Lips Are Sealed is no longer cut off at the beginning as was the case in some of the older cds. The first disc contains the entire original album, no bonus material. I think they should've included Surfing and Spying as a bonus track, and also the original single versions of We Got the Beat, Lust to Love and How Much More. LTL and HMM were released on Return to the Valley of the Go-Go's, but hearing them remastered on this collection would've been great. I don't think the single of WGTB has ever been released on cd at all. They would have been great at the end of the album, there is enough room. Even a remix, extended mix, or some extra live tracks would've been okay, to fill out the disc.
We do get a bonus disc that contains an entire live concert from 1981. The Go-Go's are one of the few bands whose live performances I really enjoy listening to. I've heard a lot of various live recordings from throughout the years, whether it is their old bootlegs or released shows like Wild at the Greek. I enjoy most of them. This concert is no different. It really gives you an idea of what they were like live at that time (if you're like me and couldn't see them live back then. I was too little). The songs sound fun and there is a lot of energy. It also includes their cover of Remember which I like. The one MAJOR drawback is the sound quality. Usually I don't mind if a show is in poor quality as long as it is listenable. But as mentioned in other reviews, there are terrible feedback issues that pop up fairly frequently on here, and if you are listening with headphones, it can actually be painful to the ears at times. It is especially annoying during the first few songs. If it weren't for the feedback, the concert would have been fantastic. Being that it is the official remastered version of the album, you want a show that sounds really great. I've heard others such as the Emerald City one that sound better. When I first got this cd, I was wishing they had included that one, Totally Go-Go's or another that didn't have feedback problems like this. But I think they included it for the significance that this show was when Vacation was performed live for the first time. I like it, and I'm glad it was included rather than just a single disc of the album. But it is disappointing about the quality, and the lack of b-sides.
If you love the album, it's worth buying. I rated it 5 stars because I listen to it fairly often, though not the live disc too often. I listen to Totally Go-Go's more often than this live recording. I hope that they re-issue the next 2 albums as well, with more bonuses. Hopefully another live show or two from 1982-84.

I was three years old when The Go-Go's released their debut album "Beauty and the Beat" in July 1981 and they are still the greatest female band of all time, joining the ranks of other bands such as Fanny, The Runaways, The Bangles and Vixen.
The Go-Go's recorded this album in New York City after they signed a recording contract with IRS Records, which was formed by Miles Copeland. My favourite part of the "Beauty and the Beat" album is the front cover featuring the band members wearing towels and face masks and the back cover also has the band members relaxing in their bubble bath that was photographed in their suite at the Wellington Hotel.
I love all their songs, including "Our Lips Are Sealed" and the video. One song that I enjoyed listening to is "Automatic", which featured Charlotte Caffey's slide guitar solo and, at the end of the instrumental break before Belinda Carlisle repeats the first verse, Gina Schock delivered the drum fills - snare drum, toms and crash cymbal - in dramatic style.
Here is the comparison between the studio version of "Automatic" and the live version of "Automatic" that is played in their concerts, especially Gina's drumming style in general. Gina taps her drumstick on the rim of her snare drum that sounds like the ticking of a clock that keeps the rhythm going and for her drum fills, after Charlotte's slide guitar solo, she starts with the single stroke roll on her snare drum, then the single stroke roll on the rack and floor toms and, when Belinda sings "Quiet now....", Gina hits the crash cymbal in a dramatic manner.
Kathy Valentine's bass playing is superb, Jane Wiedlin's rhythm guitar playing is amazing and I love Charlotte's lead guitar work on "Lust To Love", "This Town", "We Got the Beat" and "You Can't Walk In Your Sleep".
This is the #1 album that I still love and it is enjoyed by people everywhere.

A GREAT double CD set, the remastered original CD & a live show set from 1981 !!! GREAT combo for a Go-Go's fan !!!
I really bought this for the rare live show CD. Of course, the live show sound quality is kind of on the low side, to be sure. Still really fun & nice to hear the rare live show on CD. I've bought a couple bootleg concert VHS concerts of them during the early 80's , & the sound quality on this CD is far superior to those VHS tapes.. Wish someone was doing a video of them during this show back then, that would be nice.
If you ever get a chance to buy the " Wild At The Greek " ( bootleg ), show...... DO IT !!!
As far as the remastered original CD goes, I could not tell much of a difference. But I didn't directly compare it to my original CD either. It's a GREAT CD !!!

Oh here we go! The Go-Go's monumental debut in 1981 gives us an all girl band to really start the '80s with. I loved this album and it really does sound better than the original pressing on CD. I have that one as well, and it is apparent there was a technical issue with the starting position of the first song. It is there, but you have to go back a few seconds on the CD player, etc. to get it.
Anyway, THIS 30th Anniversary Edition is just great and I love it. It brings back good memories for me in High School.
The 2 CD set is the original album remastered and then you have the August 1981 concert CD from the Metro Club, Boston.
Interesting enough, three tracks on that concert CD were for the next album "Vacation" plus we get "London Boys", "Let's Have A Party", "Surfing and Spying/Beatnik Beach", "(Remember) Walking in the Sand".
The audio on the concert CD is not perfect, but at least we have it here for all of us fans. That, I am thankful for.
I give this set 5 stars from me!

The late 90s CD was pretty awful sounding , so this is a big major improvement. Plus you get a smokin' live version. I see copies till available. Get it while you can. Frankly, I don't like the way some CDs go of print so fast.

They obviously have a following as looking at reviews of their music their most well known records are either sold out or available at prices only an avid follower would pay. Very listenable.

Timeless album
Reviewed in Canada on March 22, 2015
This album has aged very well. Certainly doesn't sound it's age. Every song a good song. No filler here. Of course the most memorable are the ones we all know well such as "Our Lips Are Sealed"; "We Got The Beat"; "This Town". But all songs are worth a listen to.
This 30th anniversary album also comes with a bonus cd. A live album containing 17 tracks, including hit songs from other album "Vacation"; "Cool Jerk"
This album is not just for nostalgia for the 80s generation, this is also for today's cause it is timeless.
