J WAY - Quick, Savory, and Delicious
We love boba, but found that going out to bubble tea shops can get really expensive, and making boba at home isn't always convenient because it makes huge batches, plus there's a lot of cleanup.
We wanted to offer you a variety of instant boba options to choose from. Our kids love them too, and our wallets are happy.

TL:DR, tasty and convenient but super expensive, and a ton of plastic waste, if you care about that.
Long version-
If you follow the directions, microwave the pouch for 20 seconds (I like to snip just the very top off one corner then place the pouch snipped end up in a small bowl or mug to keep it semi-upright) and then let it cool off after nuking (cool for 30 to 45 seconds at least) before cutting the top straight across and squeezing the pearls out/ adding to a cup or your pre-made drink, you get pretty much nearly instant, sweet, chewy boba.
Could not be easier! But figuring the cost for these, it was unsustainable for me to keep buying them often. A single package has 5 pouches, which I paid about $11 for, and I bought 2 packages at a time, because I thought, what if I need two pouches of boba pearls for one drink? Having 5 pouches will be frustrating and dumb. And I was right. The pouches are tiny, so I was using 2 pouches of boba per drink.
I also bought Instant Thai Tea mix from my local Asian Market, 12 pouches for about $6. That's really easy as well, if not a little too sweet for my taste.
For each iced Thai tea with boba drink I was making for myself I used 2 pouches of instant boba, 2 pouches of instant Thai tea mix, 7 oz of boiling, filtered water to dissolve the tea mix, then added about 10 to 11 oz (by weight) of crushed ice (per the instructions on the tea mix pouches.)
So here's the boba tea math-
12 pouches Thai tea mix, about $6, not incl. tax
2 packages instant boba pearls, about $22, not incl. tax (10 single serving pouches)
Basically $1 each time for 2 pouches of tea mix, and $4.40 each time for 2 tiny single servings/ pouches of boba, = $5.40 per medium/large iced bubble tea that I am making at home.
In my city, I am not usually paying more than $3.75, maybe $4.50 at most when I buy myself a bubble tea from a café when I am out. Plus, this is instant mix that I am using. It's okay, not impressive, but again- super sweet, which is a negative for me.
It is silly that I am paying more money for something I make at home that's lesser quality, just for the sake of convenience. Maybe during the height of the pandemic when going out was harder this would make more sense.
And yes, I understood before I bought the instant boba what I would be paying for each serving, I just thought it sounded cool and I wanted to try it. Honestly I was hoping that it would suck, because then the fact that it was expensive wouldn't be a factor in my future purchase decisions.
But it had a good flavor and it was super easy to make.
The instant boba is just like regularly prepared boba. It has a nice taste and texture (bouncy/chewy) but is it worth $4.40 per drink just for the boba itself? I can buy a huge pouch of dried boba pearls from my Asian grocery for like $3.75. They take about 3 minutes to boil, plus 10-ish minutes waiting for the water to boil. So, yeah, more steps/time, and adding your own brown sugar but so much less expensive overall.
I could also buy actual Thai tea like Number 1 Brand instead of instant tea mix and brew it/sweeten to my taste, and that would make the actual tea portion of the drink insignificantly cheaper, but since most of the cost here is from the boba pearls, not the tea, decide for yourself if it's worth it to you.
And yeah, you can buy the boba pouches in bulk from the same seller, which drops the price down to about $1 per pouch/ or $2 per drink for me, but I still can't afford to drop $130 on boba pearls at once. Ever. My income doesn't allow for that kind of fiscal nonsense. If you can afford that, good for you. Also there's a lot of waste plastic from all the tiny boba pouches, if that bothers anyone but me.
Maybe if someone had a boba café and they didn't want to spend the time making big batches of boba pearls, it would be worth it to them to have these on hand, but for the rest of us, the expense to convenience ratio is idiotic. Also, tapioca is not expensive, so even with production costs and tiny individual pouches, the end profit for something like this has to be like 700% when you consider the markup from materials cost.
Basically, I like it, but it's ridiculously expensive and produces a lot of non-recyclable landfill waste.
It is SO easy to use and the taste is perfect!!
I tried the DIY boil-and-cool boba, but I don't have time for that! I want what I want when I want it! Time or money: pick one. lol It's expensive for what you get, but it tastes like boba from the shops and it makes me happy.
8/10 - Would recommend (just the price- $$$)
