Preview: After hearing about this movie for countless months, I decided to take the the movie-to-own option on Amazon as it's 5 bucks more than renting it. Purchase experience? 7/10. Easy to purchase, not to savvy on the price. I had heard reviews about critics panning the movie, but audience reviews were stellar... I had to see this for myself. Video adaptations were generally weak, and I held the Silent Hill movie to high regards in setting. For me, that's the kicker. If you can't replicate the setting, how can you even hope to replicate the nature of the movie? With that said, here's my take on Mario and friends.
Setting: 10/10 - The representation of a large number of Mario games is beyond surreal. When I heard Illumination studios was doing this movie, I thought that there may or may not be some inconsistencies in the representation of the Mario games. That whole statement couldn't be further from the truth. This is the one absolute topic that should get you sucked into the movie. From the iconic Rainbow Road, to off shoot games like Donkey Kong 64, Peaches castle, the nod to SMB 3 and Bowser's floating castle, there's a plethora of familiarity to keep you in your seat. Illumination Studios definitely took to heart the shortcomings of previous video game adaptations, and worked closely with Nintendo to produce nothing short of a visual masterpiece that brings the whole of the Mushroom Kingdom to the big screen. They really didn't have to replicate the Luma in its entirety though... that's just depressing. This is something every video game fan has been screaming about, and we finally got a movie where the most important thing is right on the money.
Plot/Storyline: Critic 6/10, Audience 9/10 - Okay. This score is for the movie goers vs the video gamers. In terms of plot/storyline... it's a kids movie. By that I mean there's no sophisticated plot, there's no complicated character development, and there's no hidden twists in the storyline. It's literally a couple plumbers finding themselves in a fantasy world to rescue a princess from an unwanted wedding... as well as helping her save her kingdom. This is a very easy trope that should be easy to spot for the target audience: VIDEO GAMERS. Much of what critics want will NOT be in this movie, and Shigeru Miyamoto knew that. Even so, he advised the Illumination team to carry on with the plan of the day, and let the world of Super Mario make its own statement. To the audience, however, especially the target audience, this is simply the staple common variety of story we want in a Mario game, and we don't really care otherwise. To the gamers, including myself, who have ever picked up a Nintendo controller and fired up a Mario game, this is simply rescuing the princess and defeating Bowser all over again... and we can't wait to watch.
Execution: 8/10 - The launch was a little befuddled with many theaters overselling tickets, but for good reason. This is a movie that caters to children while hooking adults through nostalgia. As far as the Amazon experience, I'm surprised they didn't lower the price of this movie as it would've generated more views and shattered more records, but I suppose time is money. Many compared this to the older live action Mario movie back in the 90's. I'll say this. If you liked the 90's movie better, you're not a gamer. All in all, the process was easy, and acquiring/streaming this movie in cinema HD was cake. The movie bitrate may require a bit more than your basic cable plan though... fair warning.
Casting: 9/10 - I didn't mind the Chris Pratt interpretation. He actually gave quite possibly the closest form of normalcy for a video game character adapted to the big screen... although the winner there is the cast of Luigi being Charlie Day. Jack Black is absolutely impressive here, and nothing short of genius. Anya Taylor-Joy makes for a surprisingly good Princess Peach. Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong might be slightly off key, but in the end, the only other person who might be able to top it off (with lots of voice acting training) would probably be John Cena. Keegan Michael-Key as Toad made so much more sense after viewing the whole of the movie. I could go on about the cast, but with all the critics on Chris Pratt as Mario, I think what really held that together was the inclusion of Charles Martinet (the original mario) as supporting characters. Don't worry, you'll recognize his voice immediately. The actors/actresses gave their all into this movie, and not a single line felt flat.
Music: 8/10 - Okay, hear me out. The music arrangements and the inclusion of the Super Show theme and Donkey Kong 64 theme keeps you on your seat. Everything about the integrity of the music Koji Kondo put out is stellar. Not a single beat is skipped here. The only thing is that the orchestral arrangements made me cringe ever so slightly, and I still don't know the reason why. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the arrangements very much. Something is just slightly off about it though, and that might be because I'm a gamer. On the other hand, as far as critical movie goers are concerned, the music should be well within the 10/10 range as it matches the movie whole heartedly. Even "Peaches" by Jack Black is properly inserted where it needed to be.
Final Score - Out of 50 points, this movie gets a 44/50 for the gamers, and 40/50 for movie critics. Even if you're not a fan of the games, you can still find some enjoyment from the team at Illumination Studios and Nintendo. For a studio to go out of their way to produce this type of quality product is nothing short of astounding. What I mean is, these guys stuck to the source material for the most faithful reproduction of a world we all know by putting down their genius pencils, and listening to the advice from the Nintendo team. If there was anything I would want from this movie, it would be more screen time for Yoshi. In any case, I can say, with pure confidence, that anybody picking up this movie should be watching it for the fact that we have once picked up the controller, and pressed 1p start. Do it again with this movie. It's feels exactly the same.
Easter eggs abound in this movie, while the plot remains fairly straightforward for all to follow with ease. I really love how Mario Kart/Diddy Kong Racing was mixed in, plus a watered-down Smash Bros element (or Mario vs DK) in the Mario vs Donkey Kong fight. Rainbow road was a delightful treat both visually and as a means of travel. The addition of the Kong kingdom was a great tie-in to Mario and Donkey Kong's long history in gaming. Ice country Penguins were hilariously inept, almost like their NSMB counterparts. And Bowser is still the star of the show with Jack Black's wacky vocals and musical antics (Peaches is a great song, not gonna lie). The darklands having a heavy metal concert perfectly fit the ambiance of such a world, much like you'd see in Super Mario World (world 8).
I would've been perfectly fine with just the SMB movie soundtrack, but the addition of 80's montage music thrown in was a huge nostalgia trip for 80s and 90s kids watching this movie. Helped add to the levity or gravity of the situation, which was nice. Might have been a bit over-the-top in some respects, but would you rather just hear Mario music over Thunderstruck? Nah, this was great overall.
PS: Kids love this movie. My two toddlers (3 year-old and 1.5 year-old) absolutely adore this movie. The colors, 3D animation, and ambiance really grab their attention. That, plus my wife and I play Mario games around them on our Switch consoles. They love Mario and I'd love to see a sequel to this movie, maybe a Luigi's Mansion movie?
What I loved most about this edition was the addition of the bonus X-Ray feature. It provided fascinating behind-the-scenes insights, trivia, and even interviews with the cast and crew. It was like having my own personal guide to the movie, enriching my viewing experience and deepening my appreciation for the film.
The cast did an excellent job of bringing the beloved characters to life. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo's portrayal of the famous Mario and Luigi brothers was spot-on, capturing their adventurous spirit and brotherly bond. Dennis Hopper's portrayal of the villainous King Koopa was delightfully wicked, adding an extra layer of excitement to the story.
The movie itself is a fun and light-hearted adventure, filled with colorful sets and imaginative landscapes inspired by the video game series. The storyline may not be as complex as some may expect, but it captures the essence of the Mario universe and delivers a nostalgic experience that fans will appreciate.
The Bonus X-Ray Edition added value to my movie-watching experience. Being able to access additional information and insights while watching the film made me feel more connected to the production, and it enhanced my overall enjoyment.
If you're a fan of Super Mario Bros. or simply looking for a lighthearted adventure with a dose of nostalgia, I highly recommend The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Bonus X-Ray Edition. It's a delightful journey that will transport you back to the Mushroom Kingdom and leave you with a smile on your face. So grab your popcorn, power up your streaming device, and get ready for an entertaining ride!
