To be honest, this game is extremely challenging. Hit jump too hard or too soft and you're dead. Hold down on the direction pad for too long or too short on a jump and you're dead. Luckily there are ample opportunities to earn additional lives (1Ups), but it can still be a real struggle. Perhaps I'm just no longer capable of managing the timing required for a game like this in my 30's. It can be a bit frustrating repeating the same stages over and over again, only to make a simiple mistake at the end, but I can't deny it's pretty rewarding when you finally get it right. It's definitely a rewarding game if you're willing to invest the time required to master these stages, but be prepared for a challenge. If you frustrate easily then this may not be the right game for you!
I really enjoyed the world painted like a Van Gogh. The art director for this game deserves a kudos. I liked that less experienced players had character options that made the levels easier. I didn't like the moron button that shows up if you die so many times in a row of a given level. The moron button lets you watch a computer controlled Luigi run the level. You can take over for the cpu at any point. This works for people who don't have the coordination who want to see the levels, but it means you will miss the specials. And as a purist, this felt like a poke in the eye.
Also, if you're one of those people who have friends, there is a co op multiplayer option where you can have up to 4 running the level at the same time.
Worth the price.
